Wet lease specialist WDL wants to return to the freight business, the machines for the return are already there. The Zeitfracht airline is also setting a date for the restart, now.

WDL wants to start freight flights this year. Managing Director Rainer Heumann told “ch-Aviation” that the German ACMI specialist will start cargo operations in November. Originally, the machines were to be “available to customers from August,” said Zeitfracht managing director Wolfram Simon in an interview with airliners.de.

In the summer, WDL took over three BAe 146-300 (QT) freighters from the former ASL Airlines Spain. These are to be used both for ad hoc freight charters and for longer-term wet lease agreements with other customers.

WDL has been in the freight business before

The Cologne-based airline is familiar with rental models: Under the umbrella of the Berlin logistics group Zeitfracht, it operates three BAe 146-200 and one BAe 146-300, which take off under wet lease for Easyjet and the Air France subsidiary Hop.

And the airline is no newcomer in the cargo business either – not only because the parent company has been operating successfully there for years. WDL itself operated three cargo aircraft until 2010.
